
About Shania
Born in Hong Kong, Shania Chan Choi Ching is a passionate saxophone performer and educator. She has performed extensively as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States, the Netherlands, South Korea, Thailand, Japan, and China. She has appeared in international saxophone symposiums and events, such as the North American Saxophone Alliance Conference, the World Music Contest Kerkrade, and the Asia Pacific Saxophone Academy. Moreover, she is the winner of the 18th Osaka International Music Competition (Hong Kong Semi Final) and the Hong Kong Music Talent Award 2020 (Woodwind Category Open Class).
Shania is often seen to perform different genres of music including classical, pop and jazz music. She has performed with local singer Terence Lam and Louis Yuen Siu Cheung at the Hong Kong Coliseum and the MacPherson Stadium respectively. Additionally, she has worked with local pop bands The Hertz and Kowloon K, as well as artist Harry Wong. As a dedicated chamber musician, Shania is an active performer of different local music groups in Hong Kong including La Sax Saxophone Ensemble (HK), Hong Kong Professional Winds, New Hong Kong Philharmonia, Saturday Night Jazz Orchestra, FTLO Big Band, Hong Kong Young Musicians’ Wind Orchestra and O Wind Ensemble.
Shania earned her Bachelor of Arts in Music degree at the Hong Kong Baptist University under the tutelage of Mr. Jeffrey Chan. She was selected for an exchange program in Bowling Green State University (the United States) where she studied with the renowned saxophonist Dr. John Sampen. During her studies, she received numerous awards and scholarships, including HKSAR Government Talent Development Scholarship, Alumnus C.B. Chiu Scholarship, Character Building Fund Scholarship, Faculty of Arts Outstanding Achievement and Student Exchange Scholarship.
In addition to performing, Shania is enthusiastic about music education. She was awarded the Best Teacher Award by the Hong Kong Youth Performance Art and Development Association and Muse Music (Asia) Association. She is recently giving saxophone lessons at various primary and secondary school. Besides, she conducts and coaches local school bands, saxophone ensembles, as well as the jSax class of the Arts with the Disabled Association Hong Kong.
